About the Author
Rich Furman (MSW, University of Pennsylvania; PhD, Yeshiva University) is professor of social work at the University of Washington, Tacoma. He has published many books on social work including Navigating Human Service Organizations, second edition, An Experiential Approach to Group Work, and Social Work Practice with Latinos (Lyceum Books).
Julie T. Kinn (MA, University of North Carolina, Charlotte; PhD, University of Illinois, Chicago) is a clinical and research psychologist at the Department of Defense, National Center for Telehealth and Technology.

I bought this book as a first step to stop procrastinating. It was straightforward and pretty effortless to get through. The book clearly outlines all the steps to publication and has a whole chapter dedicated to the different types of scholarly publications. I did utilize the writing and thought exercises, but what I liked the best were the case examples. The case examples and journals mentioned in this book are from the fields of social work, psychology, health care, sociology and education. The authors challenge the idea that writing is either a talent you have or don’t. Instead, it is presented as a skill that one can learn and, most importantly, that takes practice. One tip is to develop a ritual for daily writing (any kind of writing), so that the blank sheet of paper is not so daunting. For first-time submitters to publications, some of the tips are so simple but really great to know (e.g., some journals do not include references in the page count). Other sections I found helpful were on ethics and plagiarism; collaborating and determining who is listed as author and in what order; and the appendix, which has sources for finding journals. Carving out the time to read this book was worth it.
What a great book. Bought this after reading one of the authors’ blogs on publishing. Chock full of solid publishing wisdom. My favorite aspects are the exercises and the sample letters to editors. Wish they taught this stuff in grad school!
A fun read full of humor, strongly recommend.
I personally expected some example writings in this, but this is more discussing stuff. I was let down really. Not what I expected, but it’s OK
