About the Author

Kathy Reichs is the author of eighteen New York Times bestselling novels featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Like her protagonist, Reichs is a forensic anthropologist—one of fewer than one hundred ever certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. A professor in the department of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she is the former vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and serves on the National Police Services Advisory Council in Canada. Reichs’s own life, as much as her novels, is the basis for the TV show Bones, one of the longest-running series in the history of the Fox network.

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan is at it again. Kathy Reich’s latest book starts off in its usual intriguing opening – a recording of a girl imprisoned, frightened, in danger. It’s brought to her by "Lucky" Strike, a self-appointed cyber-sleuth on the trail of a girl who no one ever declared as missing. Lucky wants Tempe’s help to find the remains of young Cora Teague, daughter of religious fanatics, who has not been seen or heard from for 3-1/2 years. How can Tempe resist? She wades right in.

Meanwhile, her on-again-off-again relationship with Montreal Police Detective Andrew Ryan is on again… or is it. In earlier books in the now-18 book series, Ryan went hermit after the death of his daughter, re-emerged to help Tempe solve a case, and finally proposed… only now Tempe is having second (and third) thoughts about the wisdom of such as move.

Meanwhile daughter Katy is still off in Afghanistan, Mama is still in her high-end asylum refusing chemo, and cat Birdie is still sharing Tempe’s meals.

If you’ve never read the series, you could start here and, if you like it, go back to the beginning because there are major character arcs for everyone. But for the main part, I suspect this is a book for the fans and followers of Dr. Temperance Brennan.

Why have I read all 18? Top ten reasons:

10. Tempe has a sense of humor. No matter how dark the subject matter, she brings wit, whimsy and insight to any situation. I used to read all the Patricia Cornwall books, too, but at a certain point I had to stop because medical examiner Kay Scarpetta was always angry, humorless, and no fun to read. Tempe, even at her worst, is a burst of sunshine in the midst of forensics.

9. The Ryan-Tempe relationship.
"Speaking in Bones" begins with forensic scientist Temperance Brennan, in a meeting with a self confessed cyber-sleuth calling herself Lucky Strike, listening to an audio recording of what may be the abuse of a young woman. Lucky thinks it is also evidence of murder, although the family of the girl who’s voice may be in the recording have not reported their daughter dead, or even missing. Brennan is interested but appropriately skeptical.
"Speaking in Bones" did not go anywhere I thought it would go. Whose voices did we hear? When and where were they recorded?
Bodies turn up. Who do they belong to? Who is Lucky Strike, and what is her stake in the mystery?
The answers are there, and they are both fascinating and surprising. Ms. Reichs treats us to glimpses of what really goes on in a forensics lab – not just the glamor, but also the politics and mundane routines. We also get a good look at Temperance, who is not your average crime fighter.
She is abrasive, not particularly compassionate, aggressive, sometimes arrogant, and very, very smart. You get the feeling that you wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time with her, but if you needed a forensic scientist, she’s the one you’d want. She’d get the job done.
The author does a nice job of piquing one’s curiosity.’ This version of Brennan, unlike her TV counterpart, knows what she is doing all the time. When she strays into what one might deem inappropriate or unsympathetic behavior its clearly not that she doesn’t know, but that she doesn’t care. Clear and purposeful, she won’t water down what she has to say with panaceas or sugar coating.
I’ve been waiting for this book for a year it seems like, though if I checked the release dates I bet it hasn’t been that long. I was ready for it as soon as I read the last words of the previous book, in fact. So to say that I was disappointed by the lack of Mr. Andrew Ryan throughout the book, you could see where I’m coming from. Not that he was completely missing, he just happened to be in Canada and Tempe was in Charlotte. But this series has never really been about romance, it’s just there to help tell the story in places. It’s about the mystery, the crimes, and of course, the bones. Maybe it was just me but it seemed the bones even took a step back for the mystery and crime this time out. And beyond the addition of a new tech trying to explain how she got results from some trace evidence, there wasn’t much other science involved. There was a bit of medical information that was very interesting, and when that comes into the stories of this series, it raises the bar just a little more for the quality Dr Reichs is going to be held to in her next book.

I really enjoyed that the TV show "Bones" got two or three mentions in this book. Cracks me up, just like the TV Tempe writing crime novels under the pen name of Kathy Reichs. That the real Dr Reichs does or has done pretty much all of the jobs the book and tv Tempe do just impresses me all the more. She has been one busy woman throughout her life, and raised a family to go along with it all.

Somewhere I read a mention of Deputy Zeb Ramsey, and it read as if he was going to be a new point on a love triangle, but other than asking Tempe to dinner, after their case was done, he didn’t really seem like he was getting in the way of anything.
